A Birth Story

Birth after The Second Coming by William Butler Yeats

by: rubi g.

The center cannot hold

when a child is ready to be born.

There are aches and pains

Preceded by debilitating contractions.

When the child is ready, he lets you know-

Mom, I’m ready to go.

Thank you for this warm and cozy place,

for the nutrients and the space

to evolve as a human being.

I apologize if my entrance causes you pain.

If my head and shoulders are far too wide

for the exit way.

Mom, I love you so.

I hope you already know.

You’ve been waiting for nine months

and here I come.

It’s a whirlwind, I know.

But trust this process,

your body knows the flow.

Just breathe deep and you’ll see

how swiftly I arrive.

You’ll forget pain

the instant I’m placed

on your chest.

Your center will not hold.

It was created by you

for me to grow

within.

Your insides will collapse

the moment you and I

lock eyes,

all in its due time.

Mere anarchy is not all bad

when there’s a child

to be had.

I’ll see you on the other side, Mommy!
